Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of Hemophilia

Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of Hemophilia

Hemophilia is an inherited disorder where a person’s body does not produce enough clotting proteins in the blood. The condition leads to uncontrollable bleeding and can get fatal. Around the world, about 400,000 people struggle with this condition every day. Here are some of the early signs and symptoms of hemophilia.

Early warning signs of hemophilia

  • Unexplained bleeding – One of the top signs in the list of early signs and symptoms of hemophilia is unexplained bleeding. Parents notice this early on in kids. Bleeding that is continuous or excessive after an injury, fall, or a surgical procedure needs to be taken seriously and checked with your child’s doctor.
  • Bleeding after vaccination – This is another early warning sign that is easy to notice from the beginning. Children do not usually bleed after vaccination shots. If your little one bleeds for a long time after the administration of injections, then this could be because of the lack of clotting proteins in the blood.
  • Frequent nosebleeds – Nosebleed is a frightening yet common problem millions face worldwide. Nosebleeds could be because of an injury, extreme changes in climate, or stress. For people who suffer from constant nosebleeds, though, this could be because of hemophilia.

Symptoms of hemophilia

  • Prolonged bleeding – One of the most common symptoms in the list of early signs and symptoms of hemophilia is prolonged bleeding. After having an injury or after a surgical or dental procedure, if you keep bleeding for a long time, then it could be one of the symptoms of this condition.
  • Painful and persistent headache – For people with severe hemophilia, one of the symptoms that can turn serious is a persistent headache, especially if it occurs after a bump or a hit on the head. Such bumps and hits can lead to bleeding in the brain, and when bleeding does not stop, it results in severe and persistent headaches that must be checked right away.
  • The appearance of sudden dark bruises on the body – When there is internal bleeding, people get smaller bruises that disappear with time. However, when you are bleeding uncontrollably, you start noticing larger and darker bruises all over the body. Most times, people with such bruises have no idea what caused them.
  • Blood in urine or stool – This is another symptom of internal bleeding in hemophilia patients. Blood in the urine or stool should not be taken lightly and warrants medical attention.

All these early signs and symptoms of hemophilia are common, but their severity depends on patients. If you have a family history of hemophilia and you notice these warning signs and symptoms, consult your doctor at the earliest. Medications can keep the condition in check and help you lead a healthy life.
