The Most Common and Rare Types of Lymphoma

Cancer that develops in the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus gland of the body is called Lymphoma. The condition takes away the body’s ability to fight infection and disease. Additionally, this tumor can grow in any part of the body considering lymph nodes are present across the body. There are various common and rare types of Lymphoma and are broadly divided into two categories called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Some of the common and rare types of Lymphoma are as follows:

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma – This is one group of Lymphoma that originates in the B cells and T cells of the body. The B cells are responsible for developing antibodies so that the body can fight infections. The T cells, on the other hand, not only make antibodies, but also aid in fighting viruses. This type of cancer mainly grows in the lymphatic tissues and lymph nodes, but can spread to the blood and bone marrow. There are also several common and rare types of Lymphoma present in this category.

Common forms of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma-

  • Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma – This type of cancer affects one among three people suffering from Lymphoma, and it is mostly found in aged people.
  • Follicular Lymphoma – This form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma affects one in five patients of Lymphoma in the country. Cancer typically originates in the white blood cells, which are known for its infection-fighting ability, and they grow in a slow manner.

Rare forms of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma-

  • Burkitt Lymphoma – This type of Lymphoma mainly affects children and adults whose immune system is not strong.
  • Mantle cell Lymphoma – This type of cancer arises in the bone marrow or gastrointestinal tract of the body and is generally detected in the late stage.

Hodgkin Lymphoma

This category of Lymphoma is also named as Hodgkin’s disease and is known to develop in the B-cells of the human body. The tumor can start from any part of the body, and most commonly, it targets the lymph nodes in the upper part of the body. Furthermore, there are many common and rare types of Lymphoma recognized in this category.

Common forms of Hodgkin Lymphoma-

  • Mixed cellularity Lymphoma – This type of Lymphoma comprises of RS cells and lymphocytes and is typically prevalent in older males.
  • Nodular sclerosis Lymphoma – This type of cancer is more prevalent in young adults, and it mainly affects the lymph nodes, which include sclerosis or any scar tissue.

Rare form of Hodgkin Lymphoma

  • Lymphocyte-depleted Hodgkin’s disease – This type of tumor affects about one percent of the total Lymphoma instances, and it mostly affects adults in their 30’s. Furthermore, this cancer also affects people who have a poor immune system or an underlying disease like HIV.

To conclude, there are many common and rare types of Lymphoma. To detect the exact type of Lymphoma, various kinds of tests are prescribed by doctors, so that early and proper treatment is provided to the patient.
